You Know What They Say About "Assuming"

Just in case you're not familiar, what they say is that when you assume, you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me." (Catchy, eh?)

I don't know if I would go so far as to say that I, or anyone else has been made an "ass" of, but I do feel that I should clarify a bit: As my readers know, I am a big proponent of finding balance between "momminess" and "sexiness." This is evidenced by a multitude of articles, tweets, interviews, and features that all tend to lean the same way. My overall message is this:

We women tend to put so much effort into our families, that we often forget about ourselves. Thus, we need to direct some effort toward taking good care of our Selves, so that we can enjoy our children and our overall life in peace, happiness, and the absence of resentment.

However, I'm realizing that there is an assumed message in all this, the assumption being that (as I've found to be the case), most of us don't have any problem finding our "momminess." We don't need to be reminded to sing preschool songs, play bubble bath games, and talk to our teens in the car on the way to their activities. We already do these things. As well as cook, clean, work, attend school functions, volunteer our time, take care of the pets, and the multifarious other things we, as dedicated moms, do.

Now, I'm sure there are--somewhere out there--moms who have not found their "momminess." For their childrens' sake, I hope they find their mommy groove so they can provide nurturing lives for the children they've chosen to bring into this world. But they are not my "target audience." The vast majority of us moms have already found (and often have been overtaken by) our "momminess." It's our sexiness that needs encouragement, and that's what I try to do.

Since I don't want to leave anyone out, I'd like to provide this advice for any moms out there who need encouragement to find their "momminess:" Sing songs, play bubble bath games, and talk to your teens in the car. When you are at home, make sure their schoolwork is done, praise them lavishly for good work, and punish them when they need it. Try and eat as many meals together as possible. Tuck them in at night with hugs and kisses, and a story. Then go pour yourself a glass of wine, light some scented candles, and be "you." Just you. It makes it easier to do all this other stuff. Balance. We can be both.

Love you!

Apparently, I'm Old & I Didn't Even Know It!

A year-and-a-half ago, I turned 40. Not so very old, right? That's what I thought until I discovered that yes, in fact, at least according to the medical community, it is old... not that they'd just say so!

It all started at my annual eye exam, when I was 39 and the doctor said, "Your eyes are fine right now, but we'll see how they are next year when you're 40." No, he was not kidding... I asked.

Next was the gynecologist: "You may want to consider taking further steps due to your family history of estrogen-related cancer, but we'll examine that more next year, when you're 40." Seriously? Was I that much more likely to contract cancer 6 months from then? Apparently so.

My fortieth birthday approached. I was so excited! With my husband's birthday and mine being only two weeks apart, we planned a celebration that included traveling, visiting family, and attending a Nickelback concert. Fun, eh? Should have been, except that while we were away, my standard head cold somehow managed to turn into pneumonia, which then kicked off a year of doctor appointments.

The urgent care doctor, while on vacation: "As we age, the body has a greater tendency to progress into more serious illness."

The stomach ulcer doctor, after taking antibiotics for 3 months: "As we mature, our systems are more prone to these sorts of side-effects."

Some guy, when I was out for cocktails with my husband and he'd stepped away to the restroom: "You're pretty hot for an old chick!" (I did explain that he was highly unlikely to get laid using that line on anyone.)

The dermatologist, where I went for my annual skin exam (so responsible!): "These dots you're asking about are common in women your age."

The endocrinologist, who I consulted trying to figure out why I can't lose an ounce of the 25 lbs. I gained from taking steroids for 3 months during the pneumonia: "Once we're over 40, losing weight can be extremely challenging. You may need to accept a different view of yourself at this stage of life."

This stage of life? Seriously? Here I was, thinking I was on top of the world... perhaps one of the only people NOT suffering from a midlife crisis, honestly feeling okay about being forty.

Well not anymore! Now forty-one-and-a-half, the other day I went to (yet another) doctor about a cyst on my leg. "What would make me get this sort of thing, and how do I prevent it?" I asked. He shook his head, looked me straight in the eye and said, "There's nothing you can do about getting old."

At least he told it like it is! I'm thinking I should order a cane, which I'll surely start needing at any moment! I went food shopping and got some prunes because, well, that's what my grandmother always did. Turns out, they're delicious!

Oldness. I really am fine with it. After all, I am pretty hot... for an old chick!

Finding Balance Using Pinterest!

If you haven't started using Pinterest yet, chances are that you've at least heard of it. What is it? An online "pinboard" where you can keep track of things you like, or are "pinterested" in.

I admit, at first glance, my reaction was, "Who the heck has time for this? Just what I need... another Internet time-waster!" However, after being invited by many friends, I decided to at least check it out and since then, I've found some significant value in it!

If you're familiar with my upcoming novel, "Momnesia," you know that it's about an unconventional entrepreneur trying to find balance between her "momminess" & her "sexiness."

If you haven't read it yet, what you may not know is that in the story, the main character realizes that she has become so "invisible" in the process of taking care of her family, she can't think of what she'd like even if she did have some free time! She makes a list of things she used to like and things she might like now, and vows to try and work them into her schedule.

So how does this tie in with Pinterest? It has recently occurred to me that it can be a valuable tool in keeping track of things we like, want to try, or simply get some pleasure from looking at! For example, I have boards that include music I like, home decor, favorite books, beautiful lamps, funny quotes, and amazing libraries. There are things I've come across that have made me realize I really like such-and-such thing, but hadn't thought about it before (like the beautiful lamps).

I've also decided that the answer to the question, "Who the heck has time for this?" is... just about everyone! Any mom with a smartphone who spends time in carpool line, waiting at karate, dancing school, etc, is likely to have three minutes to scroll through Pinterest and find a little pleasure in something. Don't have a smartphone? A few minutes on your computer may be just the thing to treat yourself, and find ideas of things you enjoy.

As an aside, I've also found that it's a great replacement for bookmarking items I'd like to buy but aren't ready to purchase just yet. Instead of having tons of separately bookmarked web pages, I have a board of "Things I'd Like to Buy," with pictures of the items, all in one place!

I invite you to check out Pinterest and see if you can find ways to use it to "Find Balance" between your "momminess" & "sexiness," work and life, etc.

Here are some links:

I hope you enjoyed this post! If you did, I invite you to follow my blog and/or peruse past articles if you want! You can also learn more about my novel, "Momnesia" and find sneak previews, free stuff, events, & more at www.LoriTheAuthor.com, and by following my page on Facebook!

Winter is Cold and So Am I

Winter. It's cold, right? In many places, yes, but not so much where I live, which is in North Carolina. I mean, I do have to wear a light jacket here and there, but compared to New York, where I lived for the first 34 years of my life, winter here is like a balmy breeze. No shoveling, no window scraping, maybe a couple of inches of snow for the entire season--and it's all gone within a day.

So why the title, "Winter is Cold and So Am I"? The truth is, sometimes I feel downright cold. Not cold temperature-wise, but cold-hearted.  There are days when it seems that I hate just about everything. Even things I sometimes love!

For example, coupons. They're so much work! You have to remember to bring them, figure out which is the best deal, remember to use them at the register, make sure you have the coordinating rewards card with you. My question is, why don't they just make all the prices cheaper and save us all this work? Stores would be saving work and money for themselves, too, not having to utilize expensive equipment and take up employees' time.

And French toast. That's another thing. Here in NC there's a phenomenon where if there's even the slightest mention of a possible snow flurry, everyone runs to the store to buy bread, milk, and eggs. Because surely if it were to snow, we'd all have to make French toast. It would be a French toast emergency! The problem? These French-toast-supply-stocker-uppers are in the way of we normal people who simply need to buy bread so we'll have it for sandwiches!

Come to think of it, a lot of the things I feel "cold" about have to do with shopping. An activity I normally love! The other day, the heel broke off my favorite pair of sexy boots. Sad but semi-okay, because now I have an excuse to go shoe shopping! (Surely I would not be expected to live without sexy boots, right?) Yet I'm not looking forward to shopping because I know that I have a $10 off thing for my favorite shoe store and since I can't find it, I'll feel ripped off paying full price.

Other things I have a love/hate relationship with include: house flags (which one am I supposed to put up now that Valentine's is over and Easter is so far away?), the Internet (so convenient yet inconvenient), my cats (so adorable, but not when they puke), and many, many other things.

It's become obvious that I need a break from the normal world. A trip to the lake, where I can literally spend an entire weekend and not have to interact with anyone.

Oh, and there's good news, too! My publisher is running a coupon code (gasp!) for 10% off "Momnesia" books. Use code BOOKCLUB10 to get 10% off already reduced wholesale pricing.

See, I told you... there are things I both love and hate!

I am an author whose novel, "Momnesia," will be released 3/16/12 in Paperback and Kindle. I've been a freelance writer, journalist, columnist, and seminar speaker for 15+ years, and also have a nonfiction book, "Everything You Need to Know About House Training Puppies & Adult Dogs," published in 2005. I'm a happily married mom of two, step mom of two more, and have two cats, both rotten. Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoy my blog!

Love Chick Lit? Join the Chick Lit Challenge!

Lots of exciting stuff has been going on--to say the least! Now that it's only a month from the official release date of my novel, "Momnesia," things are really coming together: interviews, guest articles, media coverage, reviews coming in, events galore, etc!

In my promotional travels, I recently found something super cool to share with you! It's a website called Chick Lit Plus. And it's all about--you guessed it--chick lit books! Now, if you're a reader of chick lit (it happens to be one of my favorite genres), you know that this corner of the reading world doesn't get a whole lot of freestanding hoopla as an individual genre: it's usually tucked in with women's fiction or romance, which is fine, but since chick lit really has a flavor all it's own, it's kind of fun to have found a special place just for that!

In any event, I've gotten to know the gal who runs the site, and Samantha's really great! Turns out, we're going to be working together in the following ways:

"Momnesia" featured giveaway on Chick Lit Plus, the week of March 24-31!
Guest post written by me will be posted on March 29!
Samantha's review of "Momnesia" will appear on Chick Lit Plus March 30!

Chick Lit Plus is also running a year-long event called the Chick Lit Challenge! In which we, as lovers of chick lit, commit to read at least 12 chick lit books in the year of 2012, with at least two of them being by debut novelists (ahem!). Signup is easy and every time you interact (notify that you've finished a book, etc.), you get entered to win that month's giveaway!

And guess who is sponsoring the month of May? Guess! Okay, it's me. "Momnesia" will be the featured book for the month of May, with six books being given away! Perfect timing, as Mother's Day is in May... the perfect time to indulge in "Momnesia!"

Click the Chick Lit Challenge Logo to sign up and join the fun!

I Refuse to Buy Groceries For My Family

I refuse to buy groceries for my family. It's true. I do this several times a year and while my family hates it, I love it.

You see, I get tired of working around the giant cases of Carnation Instant Breakfast/Goldfish/Granola Bars in my pantry. You know the ones... the ones they beg you to buy after eating the item every single day for a month. They convince you that they really are going to continue to eat them, so (silly moms), we stock up on these things thinking, "I'm going to save by buying them in bulk!"

No sooner do you finish unloading them from your car (giant, heavy things bought at a warehouse store that doesn't provide bags, but should), than your children decide, "We're not in the mood for those anymore!"

Well, they're in the mood for them now. Why? Because I won't buy any new food of any kind until all the food in the house has been finished. And I do mean everything. Every snack, every strange flavor of jelly, every packet of single-serving macaroni and cheese that they begged for.

Likewise, I also use up all the things I myself have accumulated. It's fun! Pretty soon I'll be figuring out how to make dinner out of six frozen shrimp, one lamb chop, a can of beets, and a package of Jiffy corn muffin mix.

It's actually a great way to save money and reorganize the pantry, all at the same time. When I finally do go shopping, I'll have all my coupons clipped and none of the food in the house will be past its expiration date.

This, of course, speaks to my "momminess" side. My "sexiness" side? Keep an eye out for a different blog post!

I am the author of "Momnesia," a hot new release in contemporary women's fiction, coming 3/16/2012. It's about a suburban mom who, struggling between her "momminess" and her "sexiness," diagnoses herself with "Momnesia" and sets about finessing a new version of her old vivaciousness! To learn more, including previewing the first two chapters free, I invite you to visit: www.LoriVerniFogarsi.com.

The Library is Now For Running and Screaming

Times have changed so that it is now acceptable to run and scream in the library. Also, make and receive phone calls, shout across to others, and utilize the public computers to chat on Facebook for hours while people who need to do actual research wait in line.

Either that, or I’m getting old and crochety. Probably both.

I do love my library, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t enjoy actually being inside it as much as I used to.

For example, when my kids were babies (they are only 10 and 13 now), I used to take them to Story Time at the library. All of the mommies and toddlers would respectfully walk to the children’s area, where we would use our quiet voices. Even after the story, when we would sing the Itsy Bitsy Spider, it was done in hushed tones.

Of course, there were plenty of times when my kids or others started crying, screaming, or trying to run around. However, we mommies did our best to stop them and I can recall more than one occasion when I carried them out… with them kicking and screaming, and me apologizing.

Not so today. Nowadays (see, I told you I’m getting old) the Story Time songs are sung at top volume, regardless of the fact that the other 4/5 of the library contains adults trying to concentrate. Afterward, the kids are literally running everywhere, while their parents either ignore them altogether, chatting as if in a coffee clatch, or roll their eyes and shrug as if there’s not a thing they could do about it.

This phenomenon carries through to other times of the day too. Loud conversations on cell phones, toddlers having screaming tantrums while the mom decides this would be the perfect time to chat with the librarian for twenty minutes, etc.

While the library is an extreme example, I have also noticed this in other places, such as restaurants, grocery stores, etc. Which makes me wonder, Was I too strict when my kids were babies? Or are people just letting them run haywire now?

Do you notice this too? I’d be curious to know what you think!

Women and Friendship

Women and friendship, what's the first thing that comes to mind?

Close-knit girlfriends who are there for you always, through thick and thin, bringing bottles of wine in your time of need? Who you can call at 3am just because you need to talk and they'll groggily be glad to hear from you?

Alas, this is not Sex and the City. This is real life. And while some lucky ladies may have a friend out there who she could call at 3am, it is the very rare bird who actually feels like she can. Or would.

More commonly, our lives are filled with acquaintances: People we spend time with, chatting about things like our childrens' schools, work, what's on sale at Penney's and other mundane topics, but never really getting to the nitty gritty.

Sure, there are some friends with whom we come closer to the sandpaper of life--gingerly touching with a fingertip--but then turning that index finger and using it to point. At her? At ourselves? Pointing, no matter in what direction, is easier than exposing a wound, open for another person to see.

But then, there is another question: What would happen if we were to continue rubbing? If we were to force ourselves through the discomfort of touching those rough surfaces, allowing our friends and ourselves to break through the protective barrier that we all keep around us (thin though it may be)? And what if, instead of pointing, we were to lay the fingertip on the table, open, wounded, and allow one another the opportunity to nurse it with the antibiotic salve of friendship?

It might be like in the Sex and the City movie (the first one), when Samantha spoon-feeds a few bites of hot cereal to Carrie, who has been jilted and is completely miserable. Whose friends know she is miserable because instead of putting on a brave face and acting "okay," she openly cries in front of them, then gets into bed and won't come out for two days.

But then again, it might not be like that (we logically remind ourselves, "Those girls are in a movie!"). That's the risk that we women, who go through life acting like acquaintances yet wishing we were soul mates, would have to take. It would be uncomfortable. And it would take two people both doing it at once.

It would take getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.

I've often wondered, if we women were to put a moratorium on "surfaceness" and a stronghold on "safeness," could women and friendships be different? What do you think?

How Can I Be This Busy?

Summer is here. The kids are out of school, my book is in limbo, and I have no big client projects to work on. So how can I be so busy?

Sure, there are the typical household chores that need to be done: laundry, food shopping, maintaining the house, picking up the cat's prescription food. But those things are normally accomplished even when work is busy.

I think I've identified the problem: I tend to leave "big projects" for the summer, thinking I'll have all the time in the world to get them done. Cleaning the kids' closets with them (a mother's torture). Well visits, eye exams, and dental cleanings (ugh!). Letting all four kids invite friends to the lake house over the course of a week, resulting in anywhere from 8-12 kids at any given time, all of whom need to be picked up, dropped off, and fed, but few of whom can provide a real answer as to when exactly they'll be joining us.

On my desk are four lists, none of which are getting any tasks crossed off because I am stalling by ranting on this blog.

Okay. Deep breath. I will tackle the list. Lists. Soon. As soon as I have some more coffee and read another chapter in the book I just started reading. It is, after all, summer.

Why Bother Cleaning a House, Anyway?

Cleaning. Sometimes it seems so pointless. Other times it seems so mandatory. I mean really, for whom are we cleaning, anyway?

The kids? Surely they not only don't care, but would actually prefer if things were left messy, thereby disguising their contributions to the chaos.

The husbands? Ahem. Most of them would be perfectly happy to store all of their laundry on the floor beside the bed if it weren't for we wives who so diligently provide a hamper-home for such things. And for those neatnick guys, like mine? Neat is usually their goal, actual dusting and polishing not nearly as important.

The pets? No way. Tumbleweed furballs are their goal and our vacuuming only makes them have to start all over again.

The neighbors/friends that might stop by or be invited over? Maybe. I mean, my take on the issue is that if you stop by unannounced and have to step over forty-seven loads piled in my kitchen on laundry day, that's a risk you'll have to take. Invited guests on the other hand, should be able to at least walk across the room, not stick to the floors, and have a clean towel to dry their hands on in the bathroom.

Really, when I clean, I clean for me. Because I don't like cluttery items spread throughout the home. Because dust on my furniture makes me feel guilty for not taking good care of my furniture (the down-side of knowing what I paid for it). Because fur tumbleweeds make me feel guilty about my stepson who is mildly allergic to cats.

Come to think of it, that's the answer. For me, anyway. It's the guilt that is laid upon me--not by other humans, but by my furniture, my carpets, and my vacuum cleaner who sits sadly in the closet when I don't use it. Which all translates to mean that really, it's me, laying the guilt on myself.

Guilt. To some extent, it's a mother's curse, I guess. What's your take?

The Momnesia Chronicles: Episode 1

Thanks for joining the fun with The Momnesia Chronicles!

What are The Momnesia Chronicles? A fun way to connect with other women for a few laughs, a break from your hectic day, and a little commiserative fun! I look forward to your comments, and anticipate quite a few laughs together!

In my novel, Momnesia, the main character, Shelley, struggles to find a balance between her "motherliness" and her "womanliness," after diagnosing herself with Momnesia:

Momnesia (mahm-nee-zhuh) -noun-
Loss of the memory of who you used to be. Caused by stretch marks, toddler play dates, and trying to keep the house cleaner than the Joneses.

What about you? Have you or someone you know ever "suffered from" Momnesia? I know I sure have! So let's kick off the first episode of The Momnesia Chronicles with this question (I'll go first):

You might be suffering from Momnesia if:
You've ever found yourself sitting at your computer ordering American Girl Doll pajamas, and realize they are not only prettier than yours, but more expensive too!

Can't wait to hear yours! Please feel free to share this with your friends who may want to join in!
